Jewellery Induction
I visited jewellery work shop in the Vijay Patel building at DMU. During the two hours of induction we were familiarized with the workshop's safety rules and introdusedtoo the different types of machines and tools we will use. In the second part of the teacher began to demonstrated and explained step by step how to create an item. To help us better understand the operation of different machines, the teacher taught us to make a ring out of metal.
The first step of our work I got a smooth metal thing, unfortunately I don't have a photo of the initial work. However, I can describe what I did. Using a ring gauge tape of plastic we measured the size of ring. The metal piece was too long, so I cut it down to fit my finger. Then, using a torch, liquid and the hard small peaces of metal I joined two parts of the ring together. After the fire the ring need to clean in special liqud 'Pickelex' then rinse under the tap and wipe dry.
And tried to put this ring on my finger, and it fit perfectly. My nex step was making some decorate to my ring. I was chose letters, unfortunatly the letter N, I cant found and I took S.
I chose a small piece of gold-colored metal and with special tools hammer I presseed the letter on this metal
Than again I made some liquide to add a small piece of metal and put them on ring the place where they need to join, using burner they connected.
After fire the metal need clean, in this box (photo below) 3-5 min, and rinse over water with a brush.
Last step it is polish, need work very carefully with protect glasses.
It was very interesting lesson, I really like my work, my next step will be learn another techniqies it is engraving, I hope it is not very long or dangerous process.
Good post , like the ring looking forward to seeing your development of engraving techniques.
