Materials

All the necessary materials for my project were available in the DMU Vijay Patel building. In ceramic workshop I worked with clay which called 'Buff Stoneware'. I chose this because it is freely available and during the process I can work with it easily as it is soft. When it is baked at 1260'C temperature it is strong. But when ceramic got a fire the total weight fall off about 9%. Additionally, if there are clay residues after work, this material can be using again. For this, the workshop has special basket for waste, to reuse them.

The next what I use it was color, underglaze it is available in ceramic studio. Each color bucket has different shades depending on how many layers are applied. I used for my project 2 colors blue. I used blue because I would like to use colors from the ocean. The blue also compliments the brown colors from the wood.

Clear glaze- finale process that can be applied via dipping, brushing, or pouring. I used the technique dipping, the drying process lasts 2-3 seconds. And then again go to the fire 1260'C.

Wood is organic of texture nature, I inspire by texture leaf, bark, forms and branches. I sourced my wood materials from a piece I found in my local park, and others in the wood shop. As it was found, the type of wood is not known but I think it is a hardwood. The type of wood is not known it can be hardwood. Used this I doing my pieces of work  unique and durable. I used a rough, large tree stump that cut into 3 equal pieces by each project. Perfect for a stand.

Another part of wood it is the trees, nature texture take from park.

varnish
Clear Gloss Varnish is a resin- based varnish that used by decorative and also protect wood. A minimum change the color of wood, provides durable finish. Non toxic based acrylic emulsion and water. But the smell is very strong, using only outside. This layer varnish add not only gloss effect wood but also  aesthetics and nature look to wood.

Working with wood and ceramics materials for the first time presented several challenges. I had several  problem while working with wood. When I tried to cut a small piece into circles for by stand, the small part of wood was broke, and I got semicircles. But, I found that I like the broken design more than original. It was so interesting work with different type of wood  and using different wood cut machine by my project.  Working with ceramics was really interesting from start to finale result. I was amazed by how colours changed when I draw first time it was very lightly, but then teacher explained that they would be brighter after fire. It was so interesting to see how colours can be transformed.
I thing I took more opportunity during this project to explore new materials and techniques.
