Artist research - Jennifer McCurdy

Andre Gide says, “Pay attention only to the form; emotion will come spontaneously to inhabit it. A perfect dwelling always finds an inhabitant.”

Emotion fills me when I see perfect forms in nature, from the cracked conch shell on the beach revealing its perfect spiral, to the milkweed pod burst in the field, its brilliant airborne seeds streaming into the sunlight. The ordered symmetry and asymmetry of nature's forms reveal the growth of life, the movement of life (McCurdy, 2023)

I am so inspire and very interesting work from ceramic artist Jennifer McCurdy, who work with porcelain. She lives on the island of Martha’s Vineyard where she has been working with porcelain for over twenty five years. Jennifer uses translucent porcelain, because the surface is smooth. Than she works with potter's wheel, and than she chance the form, it very interesting process. After when porcelain is leather hard, she start cutting patterns. What catch my eyes in her work it is unique form, and I would be use in my project the similar pattern, but it will be from ceramic clay. And, also my process a little different. I first cut my peace work separate, and then to use clay touch I create the form, I thing my process more easier. And also my work and her work connect the pattern, it is form leaf, and shape like egg.

Jennifer passion for ceramics is contagious, inspiring others to explore own creative.

Ms. McCurdy’s pieces have a left brain/right brain appeal. It’s no accident: Each creation is the result of the confluence of mathematics, natural science, and artistic and design sensibility; her work is very much reliant on the physical properties of her materials ( Gwyn, 2015)

I really like her work, she give me more ideas about form, different ways how I can work with clay. This opportunity give me some skills to create my first work from ceramic, and I really enjoy the process and next my post will be about whole process.

  1. Have you been to the ceramics workshop yet? Speak to them about the process of building a form. You could experiment with the leather hard clay to develop your own designs.

  2. You could also talk more this artist. Where does she find inspiration for these forms? How do the shapes relate to your ideas?
