Artist research- David Nash

David Nash- British wood sculpture and land sculpture. He uses only with wood from trees which have fallen naturally or been cut down due to age, disease or safety. The main object in his work are organic and geometric shapes. One of the most famous projects called 'Ash Dome' (Jobson, 2016). He has been grow trees in a circle near his home a long time, it is like living sculpture. He also inspire people to thinking about the environment and how important it is to take care of nature.

My new project candleholder, which will be made from the main material of wood, is very related to the sculptor David Nash. Similarly by my work it is organic shape found in nature, such as tress, roots and  branches. Sometimes, Nash used metal make it stronger or like decoration, and I will try to mixing wood with ceramic, to add my work visually interesting.

While viewing his works, I paid attention to that David Nash mostly used the natural colour of wood on his sculptures, like different shadows of brown colour, I like this idea and I would like to use in my work. Also, I will be focusing to small details and represent balance with different materials, balancing elements and create harmonious. For this sculpture Nash used a part of tree trunk and left the bark. Nash notices natural shapes and colours, like how oak leaves change colour from orange to yellow and bright green in the spring. I can use this colour by my 2d design. My attention was catch in David's works the techniques and effect of blackened velvety surfaces. It looks very creative,  This is something nature design, I would use in my project. Also, he used the axes and saws create the form and texture. More interesting for me was how he joined the some different type of wood together, and I found information on the website, it is wooden pegs and string.

David Nash: Wood, Metal, Pigment

This sculpture very interesting because he compare different materials wood, metal and pigment. This method shows how deeply Nash's wooden sculptures are inspire me, his metal artworks have simple shapes like lines perfectly compared with wood. Additionally, Nash believes that earth, air, water, and fire have their own meanings: earth is material, air is space, water is movement, and fire is light. He represents these elements of his art.

  1. Good, relevant research. You could add more details about the shapes and forms of the sculptures. You might also want to look into what it means to be a land artist
