Major design project - material

This post will be about research material, which will be consist my product.

I started to create my first collection crochet bags which calls "Diva- Blossom" and I would be use only natural materials. Recycling cotton T-shirt yarn, bamboo handles and also adding material such as magnetic rivets, rings by shoulder bag strap and metal silver zip.

I chose Recycling cotton T-shirt yarn because this material very popular and available. And also is grown without pesticides or chemicals that means this material eco- friendly. I started to search information about where this material produced. And this material available in UK. After a £6m investment, textile manufacturer English Fine Cottons has started spinning cotton imported from the sunny fields of southern California to here in Greater Manchester, producing yarn that's being used across the region in a newly reopened supply chain (Browning, 2017).

The cotton is spun into reels, known as bobbins

This material very height quality, can keep a shape and very comfortable to working with them. Also very important by me it is colour and this material include very big pallets of colours. Algae is used to add to due cotton, it is very easily, because a algae to growing need only water and sunlight.

The dye that is added to clothing also needs to be removed before it the yarn can be recycled

I chose by my collection the t-shirt yarn material with a diameter of 6-8 mm, this width will be provide strength and structure to my collection. I will be work with hook number 8.

T-Shirt Yarn brings a recycled yarn, produced from fabric remnants of textile companies without chemical processes. The original yarn  is a great way to get creative in an environmentally friendly way. Due to this unique production process, the colours will not be completely consistent as they are made from waste fabrics and fibres. The weight, length and thickness may also vary because of type and content of a fabric (Rochelle, Grant,2008)

m         The next material in my research was bamboo.

I decided to add bamboo handles to my bags because Bamboo has emerged as one of the most popular and sustainable materials recently (Chomsky, 2023)  is a flexibly and very strength, durability. Bamboo is in great demand for many products such as makeup removal pads, reusable cups, cutlery, kitchen towels and more. But the plant is native to Japan, and need ordering bamboo in the UK. This can bring many problems with delivery. I started looking for an alternative change to bamboo, and I found wicker. This type of wicker is typically made from rapidly renewable, biodegradable plants (Gordon, 2017) This materials of course eco-friendly too and very popular in the UK. A lot of people have some items from materials wicker in their homes or garden. This material very easy clean, need only water with soap. In the UK I found a many shops where I can buy wicker.

Additional materials by my bags also be: metal clip rings(silver and gold colour), magnetic clasp and zips. It all material I found in Leicester in shop 'Button Boutique'
